Welcome to the Speaking Skills Workshop!
This Women@SCS Speaking Skills workshop was first hosted in Fall, 2008 thanks to a generous grant from Intel. This interactive workshop included tips for becoming a better public speaker, ways to avoid and recover from public speaking surprises, personal anecdotes, a fun "Powerpoint Karaoke" activity, and plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion.
The workshop was run by undergraduate and graduate women in Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science. This created a great atmosphere that encouraged attendees to openly share questions, concerns, and advice about public speaking. Participants later reported that they really enjoyed the interactive nature of the workshop, and many commented on the "friendly, comfortable environment." There was reportedly something for everyone, as different people got different things from the workshop. There was a lot of energy and buzz about doing something similar in the future!
